Homemade Granola Healthy with Dasha

This homemade granola is the perfect combination of healthy, yummy, and super-easy-to-make. You get to control and pick all the ingredients that go into it and if stored properly (in a close-lid jar) it will last you about a month. Ready to be displayed, proudly, in your kitchen and added to breakfasts or snacks.

Most of all, it won’t have any of the nasties or sugars that can be found in many (if not all) of the store-bought granolas.

And did I mention how easy it is to make?

Rolled oats are an excellent source of fiber and not only that – they are also gluten-free so can be enjoyed by those with insensitivities. A combination of oats, nuts, and seeds in this homemade granola is a killer combination for getting many minerals into your diet. So what a great start to your day.

For those extra keen to do this right, have a read on how soaking nuts and seeds increases the mineral and protein absorption over here. Yes, it is a thing but not everyone needs to do this. But if you wish to max out what you get out of each meal and decrease chances of bloating, I highly recommend it.

I like to add cinnamon to almost anything so sprinkling it into this homemade granola was a given. Cinnamon supports stable blood sugar levels, is anti-inflammatory, and is loaded with antioxidants.

Plus this homemade granola tastes so nice when it’s all mixed in and baked in the oven. Your entire kitchen will smell like Christmas!

The main sweetness in this healthy homemade granola comes from the honey and cranberries. If you are watching your weight I would suggest going a little easy on the former but it is still a very healthy option.

Sourcing organic and cold-pressed honey would get you 10 out of 10 but I am aware that this is not always affordable or possible. Either way, rest assured that honey comes with plenty of healthful properties (too many to list).

If cranberries aren’t to your liking you can go for a small number of chopped dates or raisins or go without altogether.

  • 400g rolled oats
  • 250g chopped nuts (almonds/walnuts)
  • 60g pumpkin seeds
  • 7g cinnamon
  • 200ml honey
  • freshly squeezed orange
  • 150g coconut flakes
  • 130g dried cranberries
  • a pinch of salt

1) Preheat the oven to 170°C.

2) In a medium bowl combine the oats, nuts, seeds, cinnamon and salt.

3) Mix the honey and orange juice in a cup, layer on top of the oat mix and stir until combined.

4) Scoop the granola evenly onto the baking sheet and bake for 25 - 30 minutes.

5) Add the coconut flakes once the oats and nuts are nicely golden and bake for 2 to 3 more minutes. Do keep an eye on this as the coconut pieces can begin to burn easily.

6) Once the flakes have a nice golden colour, take the granola out of the oven and let it cool down.

7) Then sprinkle with the cranberries, mix and voila - your homemade granola is done!

I hope you really like this recipe and that your very own homemade granola will be crowning your kitchen counter soon.
